IceCaps Knock Off Pirates for Ninth Straight Win

St. John’s, NL- The St. John’s IceCaps stayed hot on Wednesday night at Mile One Centre, scoring four times in a five minute, 19 second span in the second period to power a 5-1 victory over the Portland Pirates.  The win was the ninth in a row for St. John’s, establishing a new franchise record.  The Pirates are without a victory in their last four games and are without a point in their last three games.

J.C. Lipon led the attack for St. John’s, scoring two of the second period goals.  Andrew Gordon, Jerome Samson, and Jason Jaffray all had a goal and an assist, while Adam Lowry assisted on two goals.  Michael Hutchinson made 27 saves to help St. John’s improve to 37-19-1-3.

Mathieu Brodeur notched Portland’s only goal of the game, his second goal of the season.  Brett Hextall and Darian Dziurzynski got the assists.  Mark Visentin made 32 saves in the game.  Defenseman Joel Hanley, who was signed to a professional tryout contract by the Pirates yesterday, made his professional debut.  Portland is now 21-29-2-8 on the season.
