New Pirate Carey Nominated for Hobey Baker Award

Portland, ME- One day after signing his first professional contract, the newest Portland Pirates player was named one of ten semifinalists for college hockey’s top individual honor.

Greg Carey, who signed a one-year entry level deal with the Phoenix Coyotes yesterday, was announced today as one of the nominees for the 2014 Hobey Baker Award, given to the top NCAA Division I men’s player each year.  In 38 games this season with the St. Lawrence University Saints, the 5-foot-11, 195 pound forward scored 18-39-57.  His 39 assists is currently the most of any NCAA Division I player this season.  His 57 points rank only behind fellow nominee Johnny Gaudreau, a forward from Boston College.

This is the second straight season in which Carey was named as one of the final ten nominees for the Hobey. The undrafted Hamilton, Ontario native signed the entry level deal with the Pirates parent club, the Phoenix Coyotes, yesterday.  That deal takes effect next season.  He has also been signed to a tryout deal with Portland, allowing him to play for the Pirates for the remainder of this season.

Current Pirate forward Andy Miele won the Hobey Baker Award in 2011 when he scored 24-47-71 in 39 games during his senior season with the Miami University (Ohio) RedHawks.
