Portland Pirates 2013-14 Schedule Released

Portland, ME- The Portland Pirates released their 2013-14 schedule today.  The 76-game slate features 13 games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston and 25 at the Cumberland County Civic Center after a $33 million renovation project is completed.

For the first time since the 2010-11 season, the Pirates will open their season with a home game.  The Pirates will face the Providence Bruins on Saturday, October 12 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.  The opener will be on the second weekend of the American Hockey League season.

The following Saturday, October 19, the Pirates will host the Hartford Wolf Pack in Lewiston for the 7th Annual Pink in the Rink game, to benefit breast cancer research.  Hartford, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s New York Rangers, changed their name back to the Wolf Pack after three seasons of being known as the Connecticut Whale.  The Pirates will wear special jerseys for the first time on Military Appreciation Night.  That game will be also be in Lewiston on Friday, November 8 against the Worcester Sharks.  The annual New Year’s Eve game will be held in Lewiston this season as Portland will host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 5:30 PM.

Portland is slated to play its first of 25 home games at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday, January 17, 2014 when they face the Springfield Falcons.  It will kick off a four-game homestand where the Pirates will host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on January 18, Worcester on January 21, and Bridgeport on January 24.

The Pirates Go Red Night will be on February 15 when the Pirates host the St. John’s IceCaps.  The 2nd Annual Purple Night for Cancer Awareness will be on March 22 when Portland plays host to Providence.

The schedule also features four games against a team which the Pirates have not played for the last two seasons.  Portland will face off with the Norfolk Admirals in Norfolk on November 22 and 23.  Portland then hosts the Admirals in Lewiston on January 10 and in Portland on April 13.

The Pirates will increase the number of times they play St. John’s from eight to 12 this season.  That will include a pair of three-game road trips to Newfoundland.  The Pirates will play games at Mile One Centre on January 4, 5, and 7, as well as March 12, 14, and 15.

Portland will go on three four-game road trips this season.  The first will be November 17-27 when they face Providence, the two Norfolk games, and conclude in Hartford the night before Thanksgiving.  The second excursion will run from February 5-14, taking the Pirates to Binghamton, then Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Febuary 7, and Hershey on February 8 before concluding in Glens Falls, NY against Adirondack.  The final four-game trip will run from April 5-12.  Games will be in Manchester on April 5 and 12, in Providence on April 6, and Springfield on April 11.

Besides their initial four-game homestand at the renovated civic center, the Pirates will also play their final four games of the regular season at home.  The Norfolk game will on April 13 will open the homestand which concludes with games on three consecutive days, April 18 against the Albany Devils, April 19 against St. John’s, and April 20 against Manchester.

Besides St. John’s, the Pirates will also face divisional rivals Manchester and Worcester 12 times.  Portland will attempt to defend the VIP Cup against the Monarchs in 2013-14.  The Pirates won the inaugural trophy last season 7-5.

The Pirates will face Providence a total of eight times this season, down from 10 last year.  Portland will face both Hartford and Springfield six times this season.  Portland will face Albany, Bridgeport, and Norfolk four times each.  The Pirates schedule breakdown rounds out with two games each against Adirondack, Binghamton, Hershey, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.  Portland will not face any Western Conference teams in 2013-14.  The only Eastern Conference team that Portland will not play this coming season is the Syracuse Crunch, the team that knocked the Pirates out of the playoffs last season.
